Tips to Avoid Semi Truck Accidents

Driving next to a tractor-trailer or other large vehicle can be daunting. Because of their weight and size, semi trucks can cause serious, life-threatening injuries and fatalities when they are involved in accidents with smaller vehicles. These four tips can help avoid semi truck accidents and stay safe on the road.

  1. Keep your distance.Give semi trucks plenty of room, whether you are in front or behind them. Trucks require significantly longer stopping distances than passenger vehicles, so do not cut in front of them when you change lanes. Giving them adequate space may prevent an accident.
  2. Don’t drive in a truck’s blind spot. All vehicles have blind spots — areas that are not visible by looking in side or rear-view mirrors. Trucks have large blind spots on each side and immediately behind and in front of them. Try to spend minimal time in these areas when you are driving or passing a truck. If you are unable see a truck’s mirrors when you are following closely, the truck driver most likely can’t see you. Likewise, if you can’t see the truck’s mirrors reflected in your own when you are in front, the truck driver most likely can’t see you.
  3. Avoid passing trucks that are turning.Pay attention to the sign on the back of a truck that says, “This vehicle makes wide turns.” It’s true. Trucks and other large commercial vehicles make much wider turns than smaller passenger vehicles. Attempting to pass a turning truck puts you at an increased risk of being involved in a semi truck accident.
  4. Obey the rules of the road.Practice safe driving habits when you are behind the wheel. When you drive consistently and predictably, it is much easier to avoid accidents. Pay attention to posted speed limits, always pass on the left, and keep a safe distance between your vehicle and others. Avoid distracted driving and running red lights.
